Watch Season 7 of Mad Men from April 13th to May 25th, 2014 with a Gin-Grapefruit Cocktail in hand.
What began as a random experiment has now graduated to my official go-to cocktail drink. This Gin-Grapefruit Cocktail is an improvised recipe that I concocted while searching for a specific taste. This is what I had in mind: something citrus, carbonated, not too sweet, tart, all of which would not distract from the sharp taste of alcohol. Vodka would not cut it here, so I started with dry gin, then layered it with grapefruit juice to fill-in for the citrus taste. Instead of adding the generic lemon-lime soft drink (e.i. 7-up), I subbed in with carbonated water in order to control the sweetness. However, I still wanted a little bit of sweetness, and this is where grenadine played an important role. You can add as much as needed in order to accommodate your taste. All these ingredients mixed together created a taste that was exactly what I was searching for. Success!
I am a huge fan of AMC’s Mad Men series. Set in the 1960s, the series’ protagonist, Don Draper, played brilliantly by Jon Hamm, is a creative executive working for an advertising agency on Madison Avenue in New York City. He is rarely seen without a drink in hand, even at work, as with most of the other characters on the show. Although his favourite drink remains the Old Fashioned, he would definitely enjoy this Gin-Grapefruit Cocktail which contains similar notes.
