I’m working at Real Food Connections!
I landed a food internship at Real Food Connections in Saint John! I call it a food internship because my goal was to get more on-the-ground (in every sense of the word) experience with local food. I also call it an internship because I kept my amazing job at the Saint John Community Loan Fund – for those of you who were wondering.
Real Food Connections first started out six years ago as an answer to the increasing demand for local produce in New Brunswick. Their first store was based in Fredericton and now they’ve recently expanded to Saint John on Canterbury Street. Their model is sustainable, both from an environment and business perspective, or what we would call a social enterprise. They truly are pioneering the local food movement in the province. The founder, Levi Lawrence, even delivered a TED Talk in Moncton which should be available to view shortly.
Real Food Connections is more than just a store, it’s also a resource for continuous food education. For example, we work with farmers to accentuate seasonal local food. We offered fiddleheads in our stores and box program a few weeks ago, and although the season just ended, nothing goes to waste here as we cooked up some batches of fiddlehead soup that we then froze to enjoy for the months ahead. It’s great to see these anti-food waste initiatives when we know that roughly one third of food produced in the world goes to waste.
Lastly, Real Food Connections and Slow Food share the same local food philosophy. I’ve been heavily involved in the Slow Food organization ever since I’ve first heard of it: an international non-profit that promotes good, clean and fair. I’ve been following RFC’s progression and I’m honoured to be part of the team. Also, funny story, when I found out I was moving from Fredericton to Saint John in the summer of 2015, both RFC and Picaroons announced they would be moving together on 34 Canterbury St. I kept joking that two of the coolest businesses followed me to Saint John.
So come say hi! I work on weekends and will be more than happy to give you a tour.
